SMSGlobal breaches SMS scam rules

Bulk messaging company SMSGlobal has been directed by Australia’s communication and media services regulator to comply with anti-scam rules after finding it breached the Reducing Scam Calls and Scam SMs Industry Code.

Consumers and small businesses made 14,671 phone and Internet complaints between October and December 2023, an increase of 13.4 percent compared to the previous quarter, but a 17.9 percent decrease compared to the same time last year, according to the latest data from the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO).

TIO calls for rules revamp

"The current rules in the telecommunications sector are no longer fit for purpose," according to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman, and should be changed to improve consumer protections.

Australia’s telcos have maintained record-low complaint rates according to the latest Complaints in Context Report released today by telecommunications industry body, Communications Alliance.

New phone numbering arrangements: ACMA

Changes to Australia’s Telecommunications Numbering Plan to further support scam reduction activities and improve the allocation of phone numbers, have been announced by the telecommunications industry regulator the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).
