ACS declares ‘skills crisis’ in Australia

The Australian Computer Society (ACS) has declared a skills crisis in Australia and warned that a “staggering” 95% of the Australian workforce needs reskilling, as technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence, are poised to profoundly reshape their roles.

The APAC region has lower unemployment and more vacancies than before the pandemic and, despite unemployment figures in Australia, Singapore and Malaysia dropping to or below pre-pandemic levels, the three countries have seen vacancies increase by 83%, 127% and 111%, respectively, according to a new report.

  • 85 per cent of technology employers will increase salaries in their next review – up from 65 per cent;
  • 34 per cent will award increases of three per cent or more;
  • 76 per cent say the skills shortage has forced them to offer higher salaries than planned;
  • 87 per cent of technology employees say an increase of three per cent or more would reflect their individual performance and the demand for their skills.

More technology professionals will receive a pay rise this coming financial year than last, with skills shortages creating a “once-in-a-career market”, according to the latest salary guide from recruiting firm Hays Technology.
