Storage, network, and security hardware provider Synology has announced a new purpose-built range of data protection appliances labelled ActiveProtect. These combine centralised management with a highly scalable architecture to comprehensively backup endpoints, servers, hypervisors, storage systems, databases, and Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace services.
Synology is well-known, and rightly so, for its wide range of NAS devices that range from small dual-bay options to far vaster cavernous capacities for power users, professionals, offices, and more. The Taiwanese-based storage and networking company has now forayed into simpler, but still robust and reliable, products for those with a less technical background with the BeeStation.
Storage and networking hardware vendor Synology will be showcasing its enterprise-level products and solutions at JuiceIT 2024, at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre this week, and the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre next week.
Storage, network, and security vendor Synology has now announced its portable backup product, BeeDrive, now supports macOS.
Synology has introduced the DiskStation DS224+ and DS124 NAS devices.
Storage and networking hardware provider Synology has released its new BeeDrive, a tiny data hub that backs up personal files and photos from your computer, phone, and tablet simultaneously, with an extremely simple setup.
COMPANY NEWS: Synology held its mini Computex showcase a stone's throw from the main event, in Taipei's POPOP art space. It made for a more-relaxed, less-noisy presentation of the company's current thinking and new products. There were many interesting announcements with one being that ALL third-party hard drives would stop being supported in Enterprise products. Here's the video and a brief description of what's in it.
We started off seeing the refreshed DS3622XS+ NAS which has 14, 3.5-inch drive bays and is suitable for SMBs that don’t have rackmount infrastructure. A smaller version was the eight-bay, DS1823xs+.
This was followed by seeing the latest network cards which can boost SMB NAS’ network speed by up to 10Gbps. Some work on PCIe cards while others use a bespoke, Synology connector.
Next up was the latest DS923+ which us a four-bay, prosumer NAS that Synology calls its flagship model owing to its sweet-spot popularity. Next to it was the two-bay DS723+. Both support network card upgrades and Synology’s bespoke NVMe solid-state hard drives.
Synology then showed us its latest, Enterprise hard drives. It also told us that it was completely cutting ties with third-party manufacturers for these product lines because it had had enough of finger-pointing disputes with drive makers when partners had any RMA issues. Apparently, firmware updates with previously certified drives from the likes of WD and Seagate were also causing havoc in this regard.
We then saw Synology’s SSDs which are very heavily certified for reliability and stability. They only go to a 800GB capacity to avoid thermal issues. We were told that there’s no increased capacity on the roadmap, yet.
Next up was Synology’s Surveillance-based NAS series which uses a discreet Nvidia GPU to run AI analytics. The DVA3221 NAS was one example that we saw.
Moving on, we saw Synology’s new surveillance cameras the BC500 and the TC500. These are PoE-powered cameras whose major USP is that they’re not made in China(!) They can also tell the difference between a car and a person. Plus, when tethered to Synology’s Surveillance Station, can identify the difference between a human and a cat!
After seeing Synology’s latest hardware, we moved to other zones which showed-off key elements of Synology’s popular, core, DSM ecosystem. This included new Office functionality which embraces AI to create and translate content (including emails) across all of its apps and add the results to various styles of presentations.
We were reminded that many businesses are required to back-up their cloud-based data, even if it’s stored in the likes of Google Drive and Office 365 and that Synology supports this.
Active Backup can also back-up hundreds of office PCs and use Snapshots to create a single, disaster-recovery solution. The system also uses File and LUN (Logical Unit Number) versioning with multi-node replication and failover support to boost data integrity and help prevent data loss with ransomware attacks.
Changed Block Tracking (CBT) and de-duplication ensure that back-ups are done quickly and efficiently and that granular recovery is quick and easy.
Surveillance Station is also free and simple to use… you simply connect cameras via a third-party PoE switch.
It enables multiple-camera recording at scale, with centralised camera management, failover support plus, flexible on-prem and cloud archiving.
We learned that Synology Cloud – called C2 – also makes syncing data between different NAS boxes in different locations simpler than ever.
C2 Backup protects personal and business files in a centralised cloud; C2 Identity can manage users and devices from a central location as well as performing maintenance tasks; C2 Object Storage is an S3-compatible, global object storage service; C2 Password is a corporate-grade password manager; C2 Transfer can send files securely across an encrypted and secure connection.
Meanwhile, Hybrid Cloud solutions include: Active Insight for remote troubleshooting and device health monitoring on a centralised dashboard, C2 Storage for Hyper Backup and Hybrid Share plus C2 surveillance for an extra cloud-based layer to Surveillance Station.
Another highlight was the brand new BeeDrive which is an enhanced, personal backup hub that’s 1TB or 2TB in size. It can simply wirelessly transfer a photo from a mobile device to a tethered PC in one-click! It will be available in Australia imminently.
Storage and security hardware vendor Synology has announced two new cameras, the BC500 and TC500, versatile all-weather bullet and turret cameras for smart surveillance. They feature advanced AI capabilities, exceptional video quality, and seamless integration with Synology Surveillance Station.

Taiwan AI Labs is Asia's first non-profit artificial intelligence research organisation and has chosen Synology's comprehensive line of storage systems to build the core of its AI training infrastructure.
Synology is well-known for its impressive range of NAS products, and while you might typically think of a NAS as providing local file storage, it can do much more. In fact, you can end Google Drive’s endless out-of-space notifications with Synology Drive.
You know Synology for its feature-rich NAS devices but you might not know Synology also has a scalable surveillance solution for growing businesses. Well, Surveillance Station 9.0 is out and here’s what it brings.
Synology has a strong reputation for its NAS systems and it’s so easy to see why; the DiskStation Manager (aka DSM) software is so easy to use, the hardware is robust and versatile, and the platform is hugely extensible from serving files, naturally, to running all kinds of applications and servers.
