When it’s summer, it’s time for a break. But sometimes, it doesn’t work out to actually leave your town. How can you make a staycation fun? Let’s look at some great ideas to make staying home a good time for you and your family!
Plan an outside day
For an outside day, you can plan the entire day’s activities in the great outdoors! After you choose a good-weather day, go for a nature walk, making sure to take note of all the plants and animals you don’t normally see. Make or take a picnic with you, so you can enjoy eating it while on a blanket and feeling the sunshine. Food always tastes better outdoors. What’s next? Take a bike ride, read outdoors, sit on your porch swing, take a nap in the grass, go barefoot, and breathe some fresh air.
Make ice cream sundaes with friends
While going to a local shop to get ice cream is always a good activity, this one is in-home. Go to the grocery store and buy chocolate ice cream, vanilla ice cream, caramel syrup, strawberry syrup, and sprinkles. With just these five grocery items, you’re ready for a party. Invite your friends over to make their own sundaes. Repeat weekly until all the ice cream is gone!
Watch the sunset
Want to attend a free event that happens every single day? Watch the sunset. First, check the exact minute the sun is actually setting. Next, find a spot you can see the horizon. If that’s your yard, a park, an elevated parking garage – all you need is a view. If you want to make it even more special, spend this time with a loved one, and discuss the good and bad of your day before it sets. Watch it until it completely disappears, applaud, and start your night!
Go camping in your own backyard
Campgrounds can be crowded and noisy. You often have to share the public facilities, and sometimes even a fire pit. But – you don’t have any of that at home. Use or borrow a tent, then fill it with pillows and blankets. Make a fire in your firepit, and even take the time to roast hot dogs and s’mores. Can anyone play the guitar? This is their moment to shine. Once it gets too buggy or late, crawl into your tent for the best sleep of your lives (kids) and a night of really restless sleep (adults.) But it’s all worth it for the experience!
Visit every store in your downtown
If you live in or near a downtown, here’s your chance to be a tourist in your own town! Take the time to browse all the little shops that you may have missed before. Talk to the owners, stroll down the street, and even if you’re not buying, take note for when you need to make a purchase. Who knows what you’ll discover?
