Singaporean telecommunications company Singtel claimed it has achieved full 5G coverage throughout Singapore’s mass rapid transit (MRT) network.

The coverage includes all six underground lines as well as 27 stations of the newly-completed Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL).

Singtel implemented the 5G coverage in early 2022, deploying a team of specialised engineers carrying out the network upgrades.

Singtel engineers had to work within constraints such as conducting testing and installation works during stations’ non-operational hours to avoid disruption to train services.

They had to work within confined spaces, which require specific tools and precise and safe execution.

In keeping with Singtel’s goal of achieving net zero by 2045, its engineers reconfigured existing hardware that originally served the 3G and 4G spectrums within the MRT tunnels to 5G.

“Whether traveling above or below ground, our customers can rely on our strong connectivity to work on-the-go, keep in touch with their loved ones, surf the internet, stream videos or game on their mobile devices,” stated Singtel CEO Ng Tian Chong.

“We’re proud to have achieved this new milestone, demonstrating our commitment to delivering the best connectivity in Singapore.”

The 5G implementation across MRT lines brings Singtel’s 5G coverage to over 1,700 outdoor and 1,000 indoor locations including all shopping malls and transport hubs along the MRT.

Singtel has been deploying 5G network for consumers since 2020.

Singtel deployed 5G to support connectivity in VivoCity. In 2021, it achieved two-thirds nationwide coverage in 2021.

In 2022, it reached 95% network coverage ahead of the IMDA regulatory requirements of 5G coverage by the end of 2025, Hardware Zone reported.

  • 5G to drive overall mobile services revenue growth in New Zealand over 2024-2029, forecasts GlobalData

COMPANY NEWS: New Zealand’s mobile service revenue is poised to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.5% from $1.5 billion in 2024 to $1.7 billion in 2029, driven by the mobile data services segment with rising adoption of 5G services, forecasts GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s New Zealand Mobile Broadband Forecast (Q2-2024) reveals that mobile voice service revenue will decline at a 1.8% CAGR over the forecast period owing to the increasing consumer preference for over-the-top (OTT) communication platforms, and the decline in voice average revenue per user (ARPU) levels with telcos offering unlimited voice minutes with their mobile service plans.

Mobile data service revenue, on the other hand, will increase at a CAGR of 5.8% between 2024 and 2029 driven by the steady growth in the consumption of mobile data services over 4G/5G networks, and most importantly increasing adoption of higher-ARPU yielding-5G services.

Hrushikesh Mahananda, Telecom Research Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The average monthly data usage over mobile networks is forecast to increase from 7.6GB in 2024 to 13.7GB in 2029, driven by the growing consumption of online video and social media content over smartphones, on the back data-centric packages offered by telcos.”

4G will remain the leading mobile technology in terms of subscriptions through 2029 as operators continue to upgrade and expand their LTE networks. 5G subscriptions, however, are estimated to increase at the fastest rate over the forecast period and are expected to account for about 46% of the total mobile subscriptions by the end of 2029 as operators accelerate their 5G rollouts to more locations in the country.

For example, as of July 2024, Spark 5G network coverage spans 103 locations in New Zealand, with further plans to extend connectivity to all towns with a population exceeding 1,500 by 2026.

Mahananda concludes: “One New Zealand will lead the mobile services market in terms of subscriptions through 2029, given its strong focus on 4G and 5G network developments and expansion across the country and its various affordable prepaid and postpaid plans with unlimited calls and data.”

  • Axiom Space zips its spacesuits with Nokia 4G/LTE

Axiom Space has tapped Finnish telco vendor Nokia to integrate advanced 4G/LTE communication capabilities into next-generation spacesuits that will be used for the Artemis III lunar mission.

The Artemis III mission is described as the “most complex undertakings of engineering and human ingenuity” in the history of deep space exploration.”

According to NASA’s website, Artemis III will see astronauts travel to lunar orbit where “where two crew members will descend to the surface and spend approximately a week near the South Pole of the Moon conducting new science before returning to lunar orbit to join their crew for the journey back to Earth.”

Together, Nokia and Axiom Space will incorporate cellular-network capabilities in the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), supporting HD video, telemetry data, and voice transmission over multiple kilometers on the Moon.

    {loadposition kenn}

This advancement will enable Artemis III crew members to capture real-time video and communicate with mission controllers on Earth while they explore the lunar surface.

“Adding high-speed 4G/LTE network capability on the Moon will serve as a vital bridge linking astronauts to Earth, facilitating crucial data exchange, and enabling high-definition video communication over long distances,” says Axiom Space executive vice president of extravehicular activity Russell Ralston.

Nokia plans to deploy the first cellular network on the Moon as part of Intuitive Machines’ IM-2 mission, which is scheduled to be delivered to the launch site in 2024.

During that mission, Nokia aims to demonstrate that cellular connectivity can facilitate crucial communications during future lunar or Mars missions.

Nokia’s Lunar Surface Communications System (LSCS), pioneered by Nokia Bell Labs’ research and innovation, will be deployed during IM-2 and will be further adapted for use in the AxEMU spacesuit.

“Just as astronauts will need life support, shelter, and food, they will need advanced networks to communicate with each other and go about their crucial work,” says Nokia president Bell Labs Solutions Research Thierry E. Klein.

The fully autonomous LSCS has two components: a network-in-a-box combines the radio, base station, and core network elements of a terrestrial cellular network into a single unit, and device modules that will be integrated into the AxEMU spacesuits.

Both the network and device modules have been carefully engineered to withstand the extreme environmental conditions on the lunar surface and the dynamic stress of spaceflight, and have been optimised for size, weight, and power consumption.

Axiom Space’s spacesuits will provide astronauts with advanced capabilities for space exploration while providing NASA with commercially developed human systems needed to access, live, and work on and around the Moon.
